Biography

Joseph Rene Corbeil is an Associate Professor at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. He earned his doctoral degree in Education-Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis on Instructional Technology from the University of Houston, and a Master of Education in Educational Technology from The University of Texas at Brownsville. He has been involved in technology and distance education for over 33 years in k-12 and higher education. For the past 18 years, he developed and taught fully web-based undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral courses in educational technology, and developed the first fully online undergraduate minor in Educational Technology in Texas. He has published numerous articles and contributed chapters to books on innovations in e-learning and distance education. He has earned several awards, including the 2007 EDUCAUSE Quarterly Contribution of the Year and the 2011 Selected Papers for the International Conference on College Teaching and Learning. In 2012, his contributions to teaching excellence were recognized with the University of Texas System Regents’ Outstanding Teaching Award. In 2016, The MOOC Case Book: Case Studies in MOOC Design, Development and Implementation, edited by Corbeil, Corbeil, and Khan (2015) was the 2nd Place Winner AECT-DDL Book Award: Association for Educational Communications and Technology – Division of Distance Learning.

Statement of Candidacy

Dr. Corbeil has over 12 years’ experience in social media networking. In 2005, he started the EdTech Blog, a cross curricular blog to engage graduate students in discussing educational technology related news and events taken straight from today’s headlines. He currently curates several Educational Technology related news sites on social media, including Educational Technology News on Scoopit! and The EdTech Daily on Tumblr. He also manages the Facebook and LinkedIn pages for the Educational Technology program at UTRGV. In 2016, the UTRGV Educational Technology Twitter Page EdTech@UTRGV placed 100 in to top 200 influencers and brands leading the global discussion on the topics of “EdTech” and “E-learning.” http://goo.gl/bIX0IZ

If nominated, Dr. Corbeil will bring his knowledge of educational technology, distance education and social media networking to the Communications Officer position on AECT’s Division of Distance Learning (DDL).
